Arbourthorne Community Primary School

We aim high… We are determined… We have a voice… We are thoughtful… We are respectful…We care…We have self belief… We are a team

Arbourthorne Community Primary School is a large primary that sits in the heart of the Arbourthorne estate in Sheffield. It is a dynamic, vibrant and innovative school described by OfSTED as good with outstanding leadership in January 2012. We are a newly built, resource rich school and our ICT facilities are outstanding.

The pupils and families we serve are a delight. Our team have created a school that the community can be proud of. We all see ourselves as learners; keen to improve the quality of learning, teaching and leadership to be the best we can for our pupils and their families. Coaching pupils, staff and parents has been fundamental to the growth and success of the school in recent years.  Results have risen rapidly since 2008. Despite pupils being very significantly below expected levels on entry, pupils achieve results that are close to or exceeding National results in a number of areas.

Our SEN provision and inclusive practice are outstanding. We have a 12 place integrated resource unit for pupils with severe and complex learning needs which serves pupils with statements from across the city.

Our community is important to us and we encourage families to engage in the learning experience as much as possible. Our ‘open door’ policy is well used and encouraged by all.

We have recently developed a life skills house on-site to provide pupils with opportunities which include running an allotment, learning how to sew, cook and clean, cooking family meals and to expand our intergenerational work within the community, with pupils being taught life skills by older generations. Residentials, regular trips and holidays are provided for our pupils to enhance their learning and life experiences.

We use co-operative learning techniques to engage our pupils and learning is never boring in our school! We have an artist in residence, a music and drama teacher and offer high quality sporting opportunities for our pupils, supported by inter school collaboration with Sheffield Girls’ High School and sports partnerships. Pupils perform Shakespeare annually at the Montgomery theatre.

We have a clear set of eight core values which sit firmly within the life of the school. We offer outstanding pastoral development of our pupils and families from a dedicated team of staff, including our safeguarding officer, pupil liaison officer and attendance officer.

Training and continuing professional development are provided by good and outstanding teaching colleagues and external providers. Our senior staff are very capable mentors for students and have great success in supporting teachers new to the profession to become outstanding, which is achieved through team teaching and peer coaching. A large majority of our senior staff were NQTs in our school and have grown and developed into leadership posts. We give colleagues new to the profession the opportunity to take risks and grow in a supportive culture. The sense of team in the school is particularly strong and visitors regularly comment on the positive atmosphere and ‘family’ feel the school provides.

We are looking for trainees who:

  • have a commitment and compassion towards teaching pupils in an inner city context with a determination to improve pupils’ life chances, despite the challenges they may face
  • have high expectations of themselves and others
  • are determined to secure high attainment and progress for pupils
  • are reflective and strive to be outstanding
  • are committed to continual professional growth
  • enjoy active research and  understanding of how pupils’ learn
  • can embrace the ‘open door’ policy and see the positive benefits of home-school collaboration
